Stem Cells

In 1998 James Thomson, a biologist from the University of Wisconsin- Madison USA, announced one of the biggest breakthroughs in science - he had managed to get embryonic stem cells to grow. Stem cells have the ability to grow into replacements for any part of the body and hold the key to future advances in organ transplant. They could also provide a cure for a whole range of diseases such as Parkinson's disease and cancer. But there are numerous ethical and practical issues concerning scientists and public alike.
