50 Years Of Cern Physics

CERN, the world's largest centre for particle physics celebrates its 50th anniversary this year 2004. Initially conceived in the 1940s, Cern was built to answer some of the most fundamental questions regarding the universe. At the heart of all the experiments lies the particle accelerators - capable of accelerating subatomic particles such as electrons and protons to speeds almost as fast as light - 1000 million km/hr. The resulting collisions are so violent they re- create conditions that occured during the Big Bang around 14 billion years ago.
