Synthetic Biology

A new revolution known as 'synthetic biology' is taking shape in labs around the world. The scientists - who call themselves 'bioengineers' believe they can reverse-engineer life: in other words, strip simple life-forms like bacteria down to their component parts, then reassemble them into molecular machines that don't exist in nature. In the future, these reverse engineered organisms could help clean up pollution, deliver drugs straight to tumours and eliminate diseases such as malaria.
