Planet Hunter

Geoffrey Marcy is the extrasolar planet hunter extraordinaire. Since 1995, Marcy, Professor of Astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, has discovered 110 out of the 170 planets orbiting distant stars that we know of today. Some of the highlights of Marcy and his team's (Paul Butler, Debra Fischer and Steve Vogt) decade of discovery include the smallest planet - Gliese 876d, with a diameter about twice that of the Earth yet found outside the Solar System; as well as the first planetary system around a sun-like star. In this interview, Marcy offers his opinions on one of the most interesting topics of today the existence of life elsewhere in the universe.
