50 Years Of Sputnik 1

On October 4, 1957, the space age was born. In conditions of great secrecy, the Soviet Union launched the world's first artificial satellite - Sputnik 1. The launch was an amazing technical achievement. It caught the world's attention and created near-panic in America at a time when the Cold War was gaining momentum. If the Russians could launch satellites, they could also launch nuclear weapons against the West.
