Turbulence is defined as the chaotic and unstable flow of a fluid. It can be seen in ocean currents and the way in which fires burn. Yet much of it is invisible - like the turbulence that affects jet airliners - so scientists have developed ways of rendering it visible. Once visible, the complex patterns of turbulence are factored into car and aircraft designs, even Olympic cyclists’ helmets: basically anything that moves.
