Time to Remember: 8th October 2012 ~ Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded

“Researchers John Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka of Japan have been awarded this year’s Nobel Prize in Medicine for the discovery that mature specialised cells can be reprogrammed to become immature cells (pluripotent) capable of developing into any type of specialised cells of the body.

In 1962 Gurdon used an intestinal cell to clone frogs, and in 2006 Yamanaka introduced a combination of four genes to reprogramme mature cells into immature cells.

This revolutionary discovery opens up the potential to develop new methods of research and the means to make considerable progress in the medical field.”
