These beautiful images of our planet from space at night were created by anthropologist and science communicator Felix Pharand. The images combine high resolution satellite photographs of the Earth with satellite data of man-made lights emitted during the night. Most of the lights are caused by street and building illumination in cities and towns. Some lights are the product of gas flares on oil and gas rigs. Others are lights from fires - both natural and man-made. Together they reveal the extent of human activity on the planet.
