Milking Spiders

For many of us when we see or think of spiders we have a sense of fear, but new screening may make this scary insect a special friend. The Australian Institute for Tropical Health and Medicine are milking venomous spiders for compounds that may kill breast cancer cells. The venom is ‘milked’ from the spiders fangs – very carefully – particularly when dealing with the deadly Funnel Web. With snake venom already in use as a treatment for chronic pain, there could be potential for the use of spider venom as it contains many biologically active compounds that have the potential for new drugs.
