Excimer Laser Eye

Eye surgeons in Europe and America are perfecting a laser technique that reshapes the cornea of the eye to cure vision defects such as short-sightedness (myopia) and long-sightedness (hypermetropia). The technique is based on a special kind of laser - the excimer laser - which emits a burst of ultraviolet radiation that affects just the first thousandth of a millimetre of the cornea's tissue, into a new shape. The operation takes about 20 minutes and can be carried out under local anaesthetic. But it is expensive and remains experimental.
