Shoemaker-Levy

Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, the string of comets discovered in March 1993, is on collision course with Jupiter. the collision will be the most violent ever seen in the solar system - equivalent to 10 million hydrogen bombs. From July 16, when the first fragment is expected to strike, virtually every observatory in the world will turn its telescopes towards Jupiter. Although the impact will be on Jupiter's far side, the event will still provide a wealth of information which scientists hope will give vital clues about the mysteries of the solar system, and especially about the comet that hit the Earth 65 million years ago ending the age of the dinosaurs..
